The Red Devils boss has identified the three positions that are in need of reinforcements, and has some transfer targets in mind.
The first of these positions is the obvious one, centre-back. At the moment it seems that only Eric Bailly is in Mourinho’s long-term plans.
Names on the Manchester United manager’s wish list include Tottenham centre-back Toby Alderweireld, and Borussia Dortmund defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos.
The latter appears to be the more likely acquisition, given the amount of money it would cost Manchester United to bring Alderweireld to Old Trafford.
Papastathopoulos would set the Red Devils back around £20million, and is currently being scouted by the club ahead of a possible move.
The second position Mourinho is looking to strengthen this summer is midfield – a holding player, to be more precise.
Marouane Fellaini and Michael Carrick will be moving on at the end of the season, and the Portuguese will be keen to replace this duo with quality as a matter of urgency.
One name on Mourinho’s wishlist is Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, who is a player in the mould of the Portuguese if ever there was one.
Tall, commanding, powerful, hardworking, good in the air, and strong in a tackle; this boy has it all in terms of box-to-box play.
He’s a complete midfield, and international team-mate of Nemanja Matic, but Manchester United would have to pay a pretty penny to convince Lazio to part company with him.
The final position Mourinho is keen to strengthen in the summer is left-back.
Ashley Young has filled in as a makeshift left-back for the best part of the season, and to be fair to the natural winger he’s done a great job.
But at 32 years old he’s not a viable long-term answer, especially for a team challenging for the title.
Luke Shaw is already on Manchester United books, but Mourinho still isn’t convinced he’s the right man for the job.
One player who has been linked with a move back up north is Danny Rose, who would more than likely love to sign for the Red Devils.
Whether Mourinho considers the England international – who will again cost an absolute fortune – to be the right man for him however remains to be seen.
